In 1790, Prince Nikolaus died and was succeeded by a thoroughly unmusical prince who dismissed the entire musical establishment and put Haydn on a pension. This was especially true after his visit there with Pears in 1957. Beethoven was obsessive about his works and refused to have anything published until he felt it had been perfected. Bach, adding one or two minuets before the last movement. When some of the people standing around the cross heard this they said: "He's calling Elijah." It is hard to realise that Haydn's Masses were ever regarded as too severe; in any case, the Prince felt dissatisfied, and wanted a change. In 1889, he began piano lessons with Alejandro Odero, and he studied harmony and counterpoint with Enrique Broca.

Haydn’s popularity and reputation had reached its zenith at this time. After his confirmation, he was sent to a new school in Hörsching where he finished his education and learned to play the organ. The prince played an instrument called the baryton (a kind of viol type instrument) and Haydn wrote 125 trios over a ten year period which combined the baryton with various instrumental combinations. When he returned to the US in 1924, he took up piano playing at a local resort to make ends meet, but within a year two all of his compositions had already been performed.

Berg did not begin studying music until 1900 when he was 15 years old. The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross was arranged in string quartet form from the original work for full orchestra, amplified with the addition of choral parts. Here is a video of part of Haydn’s ‘Surprise’ Symphony. Thanks to the massed orchestral forces at Haydn’s disposal during the time of his Paris symphonies, this is perhaps his windiest. It is true that I was cut off from the world, but I was safe from intrusion, and thus was I forced to become original."
