The development of sonata form into a subtle and flexible mode of musical expression, which became the dominant force in Classical musical thought, was based foremost on Haydn and those who followed his ideas. Symphonies were made before he began to write them but he created an orchestral repertoire out of them. Haydn's Symphony no. 101 is known by this popular nickname, because of the ticking rhythm throughout the second movement. In 1927, he became close friends with Ivan Sollertinsky who introduced him to the works of Gustav Mahler, which had a tremendous influence on Shostakovich’s future compositions.
